Many people are ashamed of their smiles. However, did you know that your misaligned teeth or bite issues go further to hinder your oral health than just aesthetics? Aside from affecting chewing and eating, your teeth could put you at increased risk for decay, cavities and periodontal disease. Your Easley, SC orthodontist at Waters Orthodontics can help you understand the importance of orthodontic care and help you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.Orthodontics

What can orthodontics treat?
Orthodontic treatment can do more than just straighten teeth. Braces can treat the following conditions:

  • misaligned teeth
  • overcrowded teeth
  • undercrowded or gapped teeth
  • overlapping teeth
  • underbite
  • overbite
  • crossbite
  • open bite

The Benefits of Braces
The most obvious advantage to orthodontic treatment is the end result of a beautiful smile. Correcting bite issues contributes to an even chewing surface, allowing you to chew food correctly. This is important because improperly chewed food can lead to digestive problems. Bad bites can also cause jaw problems, such as TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, disorder or teeth grinding.

Additionally, overlapping or crowded teeth create small, hard to reach areas where toothbrush bristles or floss cannot fit. These areas are prime breeding grounds for decay-causing bacteria. By straightening your smile, you eliminate those areas, allowing you to keep your teeth cleaner than ever. Cleaner teeth also decrease the chance of periodontal or gum disease, which can lead to bone loss in the jaw.

Am I a candidate for braces?
If you have misaligned teeth that you would like to straighten, braces could be your answer. If your upper or lower jaw jut out when viewed from the side, or if there is a large gap between your upper and lower teeth when your mouth is closed, you could also benefit from braces. Braces are not recommended for children under age 12 as their teeth are still growing and moving. However, dentists usually check around age 7 to determine if the child will need orthodontic treatment in the future.
