Braces careWearing braces is a great way to not only enhance your appearance but also improve your oral health by eliminating the crevices and spaces that crowded or gapped teeth have. Unfortunately, your extra "hardware" can trap food around it. It's important to understand the best way to keep your teeth clean while wearing braces, and your orthodontist in Easley, SC, Dr. David Waters, has provided a few tips here.

Just as you would without braces, you should aim for brushing at least twice a day for two minutes at a time with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild toothpaste or gel. Your Easley orthodontist suggests brushing with short, circular strokes to make sure you're getting in between the brackets and wires. There are also special devices you can use to make sure you're effectively cleaning your teeth while wearing braces; one is an interdental brush, which looks similar to a small pipe cleaner with a handle. These handy tools easily fit under the wires so you can make sure no food particles are left behind.

Flossing can be difficult enough without braces; when you're trying to thread a string through the maze of metal without getting it snagged, it can seem almost impossible! A floss threader can make this easier for you; it's a thin piece of plastic that guides the floss between your teeth. An oral irrigator, also known as a water flosser, can also be a great way to make sure you're removing plaque from hard-to-reach areas while you're wearing braces.

Regular checkups

It's important to stay current on your checkups with your general dentist while you have braces. Most dentists have special tools that do an excellent job of working around the wires and brackets so your teeth and gums can stay healthy while you're straightening your smile. Your Easley orthodontist can make some suggestions for local dentists if you need them.
